Walk into any incense shop and you'll find far more than just sticks. Understanding the different types helps you choose the right burn time, intensity and ritual for your space.
Incense Sticks (Joss Sticks)
The most familiar format, incense sticks are made by coating a bamboo core with a paste of fragrant wood powders, resins and oils. They burn evenly for 20 to 45 minutes, are easy to dose, and work well for everyday use in a bedroom, living room or workspace.
Incense Cones
Cones are coreless, made entirely from compressed aromatic powder. Because there's no bamboo, the scent tends to be purer and stronger, but they burn faster than sticks, typically for 15 to 20 minutes, making them ideal for a quick, focused burst of fragrance.
Coil Incense
Shaped into a spiral, coils are prized for their long burn time, often several hours, which makes them popular in temples and larger rooms where continuous fragrance is needed throughout the day.
Loose Incense and Resin
Loose incense is a blend of dried herbs, flowers, spices and resins such as frankincense or myrrh, burned over charcoal discs rather than lit directly. This method gives the most authentic, traditional aroma and is popular for ceremonial or meditative use, though it requires a heatproof burner and a little more care.
Backflow Incense Cones
A modern favourite, backflow cones are designed with a hollow core so the smoke flows downward instead of rising, creating a cascading 'smoke waterfall' effect over a specially designed backflow burner. They're a beautiful visual centrepiece as much as a fragrance.
Which Type Should You Choose?
For daily use and easy dosing, sticks are the most practical. For a strong, quick scent, reach for cones. For all-day fragrance, choose coils. And for a traditional, ceremonial experience, loose resin over charcoal is hard to beat. Browse our full range at Ansaam Incense to find the format that suits your space.
