How to Burn Incense Safely: A Beginner's Step-by-Step Guide

Burning incense is simple once you know the basics, but a few small habits make the experience safer and more enjoyable. Here's a beginner-friendly, step-by-step guide.

1. Choose the Right Holder

Always use a proper incense holder or heatproof dish designed to catch ash and insulate the surface beneath it. For cones and resin, use a holder with a wide, heat-resistant base or a dedicated burner.

2. Pick a Safe, Ventilated Spot

Place your incense on a stable, flat surface away from curtains, papers, bedding and anything flammable. Choose a room with some airflow, such as a cracked window or door, so smoke doesn't build up too heavily.

3. Light and Let It Catch

Hold the tip of the stick or cone in a flame for 10 to 20 seconds until it catches and glows. Gently blow out the flame so it continues to smoulder and release a steady stream of smoke.

4. Angle Sticks Correctly

Insert sticks into your holder at a slight angle so ash falls cleanly away from the burning tip and doesn't build up against it, which can cause uneven burning.

5. Never Leave It Unattended

Treat incense like an open flame. Keep it away from children, pets and draughts, and never leave a room with incense still burning.

6. Extinguish and Dispose of Ash Safely

Let sticks burn out naturally where possible, or gently press the ember into sand or the holder's ash tray to extinguish it. Wait until ash is fully cool before disposing of it.

Getting the Most From Your Incense

Store your incense in a cool, dry, airtight container away from direct sunlight to preserve its fragrance. With the right setup, a single stick can transform a room in minutes. Explore Ansaam Incense's range of sticks, cones and holders to get started.
